An unequally horizontally divided white-red-white-blue flag approximately 3:2:1:3 with the municipal arms placed on a yellow triangle in the center.
The flag was designed by Randesmar, a noted plastician, poet and musician
born in Barreiras. The red, blue and white colors recall the flag of the State
of Bahia. In the middle of the flag, a yellow triangle is charged with a picture
of soybean and a fisher on his boat. The emblem is surmounted by the municipal
motto "PRESERVAR, TRABALHAR E COLHER" (To preserve, to work and to harvest).
The municipal website explains that the introduction of soybean cultivation
in the 1980s by farmers coming from the south of Brazil boosted the
development of the town. Soybean is grown in rain-fed areas, the crop developing
during the rainy season. The municipality is watered by Rio Grande, which forms
an ecological sanctuary with great potential for ecotourism.
