The flag consists of four vertical stripes, yellow, white, green, and red, with the coat of arms
on the center. I would speculate that the colors are drawn from the national (green and yellow)
and state (red and white) flags. The coat of arms has the armillary sphere,
arrows, and Phrygian cap of Rio de Janeiro as well as the sword of
São Paulo in the first quarter; a bridge, presumably signifying Ponte Nova, or "new bridge"
in the third; and a wreath of coffee and sugar cane in the second, as well as stars in the second and fourth.
The supporters are an Indian and a bandeirante, or explorer. The motto reads Pro patria semper
(Always for the fatherland).
