The municipality of Cianorte (84,980 inhabitants in 2021; 81,167 ha) is
located 550 km north-west of Curitiba. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Cianorte (seat), São Lourenço (2,395 inh. in 2020) and Vidigal
(1,974 inh.).
Cianorte was established on 26 July 1953 by Companhia
Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná, therefore its name formed on "Cia", the
abbreviation of "Companhia" and "norte". The town's main source of income was
coffee cultivation, until frost events suppressed the crop in the late 1970s.
Cianorte then turned to clothing industry; today the National Capital of
Clothing, Cianorte has more than 460 companies and 600 brands, employing more
than 15,000 workers, that is, more than 1/5 of the town's population. Regional
indirect employment accounts for another 30,000 jobs. Most companies have their
showroom on a street known as Fashion Street, which was completely revamped in
2006. Expovest, one of the main fairs dedicated to clothing in South Brazil, has
been organized every year in Cianorte since 990.

The flag and arms of Cianorte are prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 224 promulgated on 26 June 1974.
Article 6.
The
municipal flag of Cianorte, designed by Arcinoe Antonio Peixoto de Faria, shall
be quartered per saltire, the blue quarters being formed by four white stripes
of 2 units in width superimposed with red stripes of 1 unit in width, placed two
by two in bend and bend sinister, starting from the angles of a central white
rectangle charged with the municipal coat of arms.
§1. In compliance with the
tradition of Portuguese heraldry, of which Brazil inherited its canons and
rules, municipal flags shall be divided into eight, six, four or three parts,
using the same color as the field of the coat of arms and featuring in the
center or at hoist a geometric figure charged with the municipal coat of arms.
§2. The municipal flag of Cianorte obeys the general rule, being quartered per
saltire composed of stripes connecting the flag's cantons and crossing each
other in the center, which features a geometric figure charged with the coat of
arms. The coat of arms in the center of the flag symbolizes the municipal
government while the white circle inscribing it represents the town proper as
the seat of the municipality. The circle is the heraldic symbol of eternity,
being a geometric figure without either a beginning or an end. White is a symbol
of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious spirit. The white
stripes superimposed with red stripes symbolize the municipal power spreading to
all the parts of the territory. Red is a symbol of dedication, patriotic love,
audacity, intrepidity, courage and valiance. The blue quarters represent the
rural estates existing on the municipal territory. Blue is a symbol of justice,
nobleness, perseverance, zeal and loyalty.

with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have the official dimensions
prescribed for the national flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in length.
