The municipality of Piên (12,746 inhabitants in 2019; 25,479 ha) is located on
the border with Santa Catarina, 100 km south of Curitiba. The municipality is
composed of the districts of Piên (seat) and Trigolândia.
Piên was
settled in the 1845s by the Vieira family, coming from Morretes. The early
colonists noticed the abundance of hawks, whose chirping ("piar") inspired the
name of the ne settlement. Historian Manuel Machuca, however, claims that "piên"
means "a heart" in Tupi-Guarani.
