Municipality

The municipality of Pirapó (3,349 inhabitants; 28,700 ha) is located on the border with Argentina, 600 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Pirapó is named for a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "fish's jump", as a reference to the abundant fishes that jumped over the waterfalls of river Ijuí.
Pirapó was established in 1903 as Colônia Sommer, by Henrique Sommer (1852-1923) and 12 families coming from the valley of Pigs' River. Sommer established a port and operated a boat; when he died, his son, Evaldo, succeeded him as the owner of a big fleet that sailed to Uruguaiana on river Uruguai.
The municipality of Pirapó was established by State Law No. 8,425 promulgated on 30 November 1987, separating from São Nicolau and São Luiz Gonzaga, and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.
