The municipality of Alegria (4,085 inhabitants in 2016; 17,268 ha) is located
400 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Alegria was originally settled by
Francisco Correa Taborda and his wife, Josefina dos Reis Taborda; after the
Ragamuffin War, Taborda was granted a big domain in Casacavel (Paraná). One of
his brother-in-arms was granted a domain of the same size in Inhacorá; scared by
the Indians, he swapped his domain with Taborda.
Taborda's "civilizing"
effort ended when the Indians attacked his camp and severely injured his wife
with an arrow; the couple withdrew to Cruz Alta, sharing the domain between
their two sons, João and Vicente.
Vicente Taborda resisted an Indian attack
that lasted several days. He signaled the final victory by raising a flag,
therefore the name of Rincão das Bandeiras (Flag's Corner) given to the place.
His brother João celebrated the event by organizing the Glee Dance ("baile do
alegria"). There are other, local explanations of the origin of the town's name,
all related with glee.
The modern town of Alegria was established in the
1920-1930 by German colonists coming from the Old Colony of Montenegro and
Polish colonists coming from Ijuí.
The district of Rincão de Alegria was
established within the municipality of Três de Maio by Municipal Law No. 7
promulgated on 22 October 1959. The municipality of Alegria, composed of the
districts of Alegria and Espírito Santo, was established by State Law No. 8,502
promulgated on 31 December 1987 and inaugurated on 1 January 1989. The
municipality was renamed to Alegria by State Law No. 8,502 promulgated on 31
December 1987.
