Municipality

The municipality of Alpestre (6,458 inhabitants in 2018; 32,875 ha), located 450 km north-west of Porto Alegre, is the northernmost municipality in Rio Grande do Sul.

Alpestre, established in 1930, was successively known under different names, Paiol de Paduam, Paiol Grande, Itahy, Tercero (as the 3rd district of the municipality of Iraí). Its present-day's name was suggested by the politician Vicente Dutra, who visited the place and found it similar to the Swiss Alps.
The municipality of Alpestre was established by Law No. 4,688 promulgated on 26 December 1963, and inaugurated on 13 April 1964.

Symbols

The "emblem representing the municipality of Alpestre" is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 16 promulgated on 27 July 1976.

Article 2.
§1. The emblem is divided into three parts:

1. Crown - representing the municipality's sovereignty on its territory; when colored, celestial blue for the inner part and golden yellow for the outer part.

2. Shield - composed of three parts:
2.1. Upper stripe, containing a rising sun emitting rays, whose coloring shall match the rising sun's proper colors.
2.2. Central stripe, containing a part of the national flag, in which the lozenge is charged with the characteristic emblem of the municipality, a bean plant growing from the soil. In a narrow, pseudo-circular ring surrounding the cereal symbol, the writing "Municipio de Alpestre". As for the colors, the lozenge, yellow (of the national flag), its left part, red (of the state flag), and its right part, green (of the national flag). As for the emblem, the bean plant, green, the part representing the sky, blue, and the part representing the soil, brown.
2.3. Lower stripe, representing the main source of income for the municipality, agriculture, with sinuous lines, horizontal, on a brown background.

3. Independent stripe [scroll] beneath the shield, reading: "1930", the year of initiation of the settlement that is today the seat of the municipality; "Pró-Pátria", highlighting the rights and duties of the municipality regarding the state [Rio Grande do Sul] and the Union [Brazil]; "1963", the year of establishment of the municipality by Law No. 4,638 promulgated on 26 December 1963. The scroll celestial blue.

§2. All the outlines, lines, letters and numbers shall be represented in black.
