The municipality of Caiçara (5,215 inhabitants in 2014; 18,920 ha) is located
440 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Caiçara, originally known as Lagoa da
Figueira (Figtree's Lake) for a lake and a tree once used as landmark by
travelers, was originally settled by Italian colonists.
The municipality was
established by State Law No. 5,067 promulgated on 19 October 1965, separating
from Frederico Westphalen, and inaugurated on 19 May 1966.
