The municipality of Coqueiro Baixo (1,528 inhabitants in 2010; 112 sq. km) is located in east central Rio Grande do Sul. Coqueiro Baixo was founded around 1850 by Antônio Gotardi, Luiza Sbaraini, José Zanata, Bertinho Justa, Miguel Just, Pedro Weit, Antônio Propício and Noratino Propício, who named the place for the coconut trees ("coqueiros") found there. More specifically, Coqueiro Baixo ("hollow coconut tree") is said to refer to a coconut tree with a big, hollow trunk that grew near the brook watering the municipality. A shop was built in that place, subsequently used as a meeting and stopping point by muleteers travelling in the region. The town was mostly settled by Italian colonists, whose descendants have preserved the traditions, highlighted in the yearly Italian Song Festival. The municipality of Coqueiro Baixo was established by State Law No. 10,765 of 16 April 1996, from parts of the municipalities of Nova Bréscia and Relvado, and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.
The flag of Coqueiro Baixo is prescribed by Law No. 61 of 28 August 2001. The colors of the flag are those of the flag of the Rio Grande do Sul State.
The coat of arms of Coqueiro Baixo is prescribed by Law No. 45 of 4
July 2001.
The shield is of classical Latin shape, surmounted by a five-towered
mural crown, the universal symbol of municipal heraldry and
representing a "cidade" of 3rd rank seat of a municipality. The ports
of the towers are red outlined in yellow.
The upper left quarter of the shield depicts a rising sun over a road
representing the road to Coqueiro Baixo, two coconut trees
("coqueiros") making the arms canting and a waterfall in a green
landscape, representing the natural resources of the municipality.
The upper right corner of the shield depicts a gem surrounded by the
tools required to extract it, representing the mining resources in the
municipality.
In the lower part of the shield, the hens, the pig and the bovine
represent the local animal productions.
Grafted in base, the handshake represents harmony.
The shield is surrounded dexter by maize and beans, representing the
agricultural production, and sinister by grapes representing wine-
growing present in all family estates as the symbol of Italian
colonization.
The scroll placed below the shield is inscribed the name of the
municipality surrounded by the dates of establishment ("16.04.1996") and
of inauguration ("01.01.2001") of the municipality.
