The municipality of Coqueiros do Sul (2,486 inhabitants in 2014; 27,727 ha)
is located 300 km of Porto Alegre.
Coqueiros do Sul was established in
1924 by Felix Guerra, owner of the Coqueiros estate. When initiating paths
through the forest, the early German colonists came across three prominent
coconut trees, so that the place was known as Três Coqueiros (Three Coconut
Trees), subsequently shortened to Coqueiros.
The municipality of Coqueiros do
Sul was established by Municipal Law No. 9,565 promulgated on 20 March 1992. "do
Sul" (Southern) was added to the name of the municipality for the sake of
differentiation from other placed named Coqueiros.
