Description of the Flag

The town's namesake is the journalist, poet and diplomat Antônio Vicente da Fontoura Xavier (1856-1922). Author of the anti-monarchic rhymed pamphlet "O Régio Saltimbanco" (1887), he translated into Portuguese works by Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire and William Shakespeare.

The flag and arms of Fontoura Xavier are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 154 promulgated in 1979.

In compliance with the Portuguese heraldic traditions, and their inherited canons and rules, municipal flags have to be divided in eight or six horizontal stripes, quartered or divided in three parts, featuring the same colors as the field of the coat of arms and in the center a geometrical figure inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
The flag of Fontoura Xavier is quartered per saltire. The coat of arms applied in the flag's center represents the municipal government. The white circle is a symbol of eternity in heraldic science as a geometric figure without either beginning or end; white is a symbol of peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling. The white stripes charged with red stripes quartering the flag represent the spread of municipal power all over the territory. Red is a symbol of dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage and valiance, while the quarters represent the rural estates scattered over the municipal territory. Green is a symbol of glee, abundance, honor and courtesy; green also symbolizes hope as greening fields in spring promising profuse harvests.
