The municipality of Minas de Lećo (7,631 inhabitants; 42,401 ha) is located
90 km due west of Porto Alegre, in the coal-mining region of Rio Grande do Sul.
Minas de Lećo originates in the discovery in 1885 of coal deposits in Curral
Alto, part of the domain owned by the Spanish colonist Francisco Lećo.
The
municipality of Minas de Lećo was established by State Law No. 9,582 promulgated
on on 20 March 1992.

The flag and arms of Minas do Lećo are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 62
promulgated on 15 June 1993.
Article 2.
The coat of arms of the
municipality shall have the following description.
In the shape of a
Portuguese shield, defined by black parallel lines, [outlined in] red, as a
symbol of the people' struggle for main conquests; a surrounding stripe,
celestial blue with four yellow stars, as a symbol of the municipality's
resources and potential: coal, agriculture and cattle-breeding, industry and
people. Celestial blue is the color of infinite space, where resources and
potential can infinitely grow, while yellow, the color of gold, symbolizes
wealth. A white space, the color of peace, charged with an ocher, powerful and
high lion, holding a scepter and a parchment. The lion is the municipality's
namesake; with the scepter and parchment, it also symbolizes power and
knowledge, respectively. The shield supported by rice panicles and leaves, all
green, which symbolize the soil's potential. Beneath the shield a white scroll
with yellow border inscribed "Minas de Lećo, 20 -3, 1992", the municipality's
name and date of creation."
Article 4.
The flag of the municipality of
Minas de Lećo has for official colors blue, white and yellow, arranged in three
diagonal stripes; from the upper left angle to 8 units in length from the lower
left angle, the blue part; from the upper right angle to 10 units of the lower
right angle, the yellow part; the white part between those defined above.
Centered on the white stripe, the coat of arms of the municipality, in width 8.8
units and in proportional length.
§1. Blue represents the space where all
the municipality's resources and potential can infinitely develop.
§2. White
represents the pacific, continuous struggle for new conquests.
§3. Yellow,
the color of gold, represents the municipality's resources and potential.
Article 5.
The flag's features shall obey the following rules.
§1. The
flag's width is 12 units.
§2. The flag's length is 18 units.
