The municipality of Palmares do Sul (11,306 inhabitants in 2010; 95,071 ha)
is located 90 km south-east of Porto Alegre.
The municipality is composed of
the districts of Palmares do Sul, Bacupari (est. by Municipal Law No. 79
promulgated on 26 December 1985), Batiatuva (est. by Municipal Law No. 583
promulgated on 6 May 1996), Casa Velha (est. by Municipal Law No. 606
promulgated on 12 December 1996), Frei Sebastão (est. by Municipal Law No. 79
promulgated on 26 December 1985), Granja Getúlio Vargas (est. as CR-1 by
Municipal Law No. 606 promulgated on 12 December 1996), and Quintão (est. by
Municipal Law No. 79 promulgated on 26 December 1985).
Palmares do Sul
was established as the the district of Palmares, part of the municipality of
Conceição do Arroio (renamed to Osório by State Decree-Law No. 7,199 promulgated
on 31 March 1938), by Provincial Law No. 1,529 promulgated on 4 December 1885.
The district was renamed to Passinhos by Municipal Act No. 213 issued on 21
March 1921 and to Emilio Mayer by State Decree-Law No. 720 issued on 29 December
1944. The district was renamed to Palmares do Sul by Municipal Law No. 2
promulgated on 17 July 1950.
The municipality of Palmares do Sul was
established by State Law No. 7,654 promulgated on 12 May 1982, separating from
Osório, Tramandaí and Viamão, and inaugurated on 31 January 1983.
