The municipality of Panambi (38,058 inhabitants in 2010; 49,086 ha) is
located 370 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Panambi, known in 1898 as Neue
Württmeberg and renamed to Pindorama in 1938, Tabapirã in 1944, and Panambi on
29 December 1944, is named for a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "butterfly". The
town's elder remember that the place was once crowded with blue butterflies.
The municipality of Panambi was established on 15 December 1954 and inaugurated
on 28 February 1955.

The coat of arms of Panambi, designed by Lieselotte Gerling, is prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 68 promulgated on 21 May 1956.
The coat of arms is
composed of a Portuguese shield divided into four equal parts. The colors are
those of the flag of Rio Grande do Sul, green, yellow, and red, with black
outlines. The shield is surmounted by a half-cogwheel, as a symbol of industry,
inscribed with "Cidade das Máquinas Panambi" in red capital letters.
The plow
featured in the first quarter represents agriculture.
The hammer and anvil
represent blacksmith's work, a tradition among the immigrants who settled the
place.
In the lower quarters, the palm tree and the oak laves and acorns
represent the union between Brazil and Germany.
