The municipality of São Sebastião do Caí (21,944 inhabitants in 2010; 11,&45
ha) is located 60 km north of Porto Alegre.
São Sebastião do Caí was
established by the Guimarães family in 1808. The settlement was soon known as
Porto dos Guimarães for the port established on river Caí, used for trade with
Caixas do Sul, Porto Alegre and the neighboring areas. In 1848, the Guimarães
brothers decided to erect a church and asked Bishop Sebastião Dias Laranjeira to
name its patron saint; unsurprisingly, the bishop proposed to dedicate the
church to St. Sebastian. The dedication was accepted and the bishop rewarded the
community by offering a wooden statue of the saint, which is still venerated. A
plot to build the church was offered by Francisco Mateus; the church's
cornerstone was blessed in 1864.
The municipality of São Sebastião do Caí was
established on 1 May 1875 and the church was consecrated on 15 July 1875.
