Municipality

The municipality of Venâncio Aires (70,481 inhabitants, 77,220 ha) is located 130 km of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Venâncio Aires (seat), Mariante, Deodoro, Santa Emília, Centra Linha Brasil, Palanque, Linha Arlindo, Vale de Sampaio and Estância Nova.
Venâncio Aires is Brazil's second producer of tobacco (9,000 ha) and Rio Grande do Sul's third maize producer (19,800 ha).

The town is named for the abolitionist lawyer Venâncio de Oliveira Ayres (1841-1885) who was born in Itapetininga (Săo Paulo) and settled to Rio Grande do Sul. He founded the Riograndense Republican Party an had for followers Júlio Prates de Castilhos (1860-1903), Pinheiro Machado (1851-1915) and Ramiro Barcelos (1851-1916).

The coat of arms of Venâncio Aires is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 675 promulgated on 4 September 1970.

Article 2.
A Portuguese shield with a blue background, representing the firmament, bordered in dark blue. In the firmament's center, a mate calabash, characterizing the fraternity, friendship, tradition and wealth of Venâncio Aires' people, complemented by a handshake, the universal symbol of human fraternity. The calabash is brown, which also represents Venâncio Aires' soil. The green mate represents the Capital of Mate. Venâncio Aires was discovered by Azorean colonists in the late 18th century, who found mate herb in the rainforests lining streams Castelhano and Sampaio. The first calabash mate introduced to Porto Alegre came from Vanâncio Aires, and the region soon became a mate producer. A scroll of brick color is placed beneath the shield, inscribed with "Venâncio Aires", the municipality's date of foundation and the name of the state. Beneath the scroll, the writing "Capital Nacional do Chimarrăo", in green. The shield surrounded on each side by a tobacco plant proper. The four-towered mural crown argent represents the town as a county seat.

The coat of arms was originally prescribed by Municipal Law No. 500 promulgated on 26 December 1963, which was abrogated by the aforementioned Law.

Article 1.
A shield containing a calabash with straw and mate, surrounded by two branches of flowering tobacco, the municipality's main crop. Mate appears in the calabash, representing the municipality's main production and symbolizing the traditional use of calabash. The calabash features a yellow stripe charged with two symbols: Industry and Education, representing the municipality's resources. The brown color of the calabash represents Venâncio Aires' soil. Beneath the shield is placed a green scroll with the municipality's name and date of political emancipation. The whole is surmounted by a handshake symbolizing traditional friendship.
