Municipality

The municipality of Irineópolis (11,289 inhabitants in 2019; 58,956 ha) is located on the border with Paraná, 400 km north-west of Florianópolis.

Irineópolis was established in 1885 by the family of Caetano Valões, for which the settlement was originally named. Once part of Paraná, Valões was eventually incorporated to Santa Catarina in 1916, as prescribed by the treaty that fixed the limits between the two states.
The district of Valões was established within the municipality of Porto União in 1921.
The municipality of Irineópolis was established on 22 July 1962. The municipality's new name, a tribute to Irineu Bornhausen (1896-1974), Governor of Santa Catarina from 1951 to 1956 and State Senator from 1959 to 1967, is deemed to difficult to spell by several inhabitants, who still use the old name of Valões.
