The municipality pf Morro da Fumaça (17,796 inhabitants in 2019; 8,294 ha) is
located 200 km south-west of Florianópolis.
Morro da Fumaça was settled
in 1900 by Bielorussian immigrants, who lived from pig breeding. In 1910, they
moved to other places colonized by Russians and sold their estates to Italian
colonists coming from Rio Cocal, Rio América, Rio Carvão and Rio Galo.
The municipality's odd name (Smoke Hill) might refer to a marshy area that
created a dense fog at dawn, which completely concealed the hill, or to people
transporting products to the port of Laguna who set up a fire atop the hill
where they spent the night, generating smoke that could be seen from miles away.
