The municipality of Princesa (2,758 inhabitants in 2010; 8,622 ha) is located
on the border with Argentina, 720 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Princesa was established in the 1950s by colonists of German and Italian origin.
The municipality's name (Princess) refers to a vision reported by João Maria de
Lara, who "saw" a princess atop a Brazilian pine.
