Rio Fortuna was established
in 1872. Originally established in Encruzo, now part of Rio Fortuna's downtown,
the colonists subsequently settled São Maurício and Rio Bravo Baixo (1880), Rio
Café, Rio Pinto and Rio Branco (1898), Alto Rio Fortuna (1900), Rio Claro
(1914), Rio Chapéu (1920), Barra do Rio Chapéu (1920), Rio Facão (1920) and Rio
dos Bugres (1921).
The district of Rio Fortuna was established within the
municipality of Imaruí by Decree No. 789 issued on 15 April 1909, to be
transferred to Tubarão by Decree-Law No. 107 issued on 3 January 1921, and to
the new municipality of Braço do Norte by State Law No. 1,033 promulgated on 30
December 1953.
The municipality of Rio Fortuna was established by State Law

Rio Fortuna is named for an event
that occurred during the survey of the region by the Empresa de Terras e
Colonização. A group of local hunters and land surveyors killed two tapirs,
which fell down to the unnamed river, which was named Glückfluss (German,
Fortune River), subsequently Rio Fortuna.
