From the website of Minusio:
"The coat of arms of the municipality of Minusio appeared for the first time in 1944 on the title page of
the book 'Minusio – Historical Notes' by Giuseppe Mondada. It is taken from a woodcut by the
artist Wilhelm Schwerzmann, a sculptor originally from Cham ZG and resident in our municipality for more
than 50 years. In accordance with the Municipal Regulation of Minusio, the colour drawing features a red
lion brandishing a golden (or yellow) sword, while a blue band appears in the background, solid in
versions or represented with a background of horizontal lines in others.
Decades later, during 2022, the Municipality of Minusio decided to give a new graphic look to the
municipal coat of arms, with the aim of defining a single version to be applied systematically in all
relevant contexts, while conforming as much as possible to the stylistic features of Wilhelm Schwerzmann's
works.
The graphic work was therefore developed in the sense of a revisitation of the design of the original coat
of arms, enhancing the link with Wilhelm Schwerzmann and taking up – as far as possible – the
elements of the previous coat of arms, respecting the fundamental principles of heraldry and at the same
time giving it a Current and easily readable graphic style.
Starting from a bas-relief by the artist, preserved on a stone base at the beginning of the Fontile bridge
in Via Simen, we proceeded with a formal analysis of the lion's design, which led to a synthesis of its
essential elements. These elements have been reworked in the sense of their stylization and clarification,
and therefore brought together in a composition faithful to the original and at the same time innovative
and current.
A coat of arms is not just a graphic idea, but provides information on the personality, characteristics
and intentions of the person or group who adopts it. In this sense, colors, symbols, metals and positions
have precise meanings in each coat of arms.
'The lion was taken as the emblem of a strong and prudent prince, of intrepidity, of a noble soul, of
virile resistance, of generous indignation, of gratitude, of contemplation, of benign affability, of an
austere life, of tyranny, of a clement winner. When it is red, it is the sign of a warrior who is all
fire in execution, and full of fidelity in operating' (Italian Heraldic Historical Archive).
In the desire to conceive a coat of arms compliant with the aforementioned principles and respectful of
the description established in the Municipal Regulation of Minusio, the coat of arms of the Municipality
of Minusio was thus reworked (in colour and in black and white)."
