On 14 March 2005 the new commune of Alto Malcantone was formed through the merger of Arosio, Breno,
Fescoggia, Mugena and Vezio (see below).
The emblem of the new commune shows a leaf of the chestnut tree (castanea sativa), a tree which is
very typical for Ticino. It is the only emblem in Ticino which only shows a leaf of that tree, in contrast
to the depictions with whole trees or branches.
Argent three rhododendron cinquefoils gules barbed and seeded proper.
Željko Heimer, 25 June 2003
The flowers on the flag of Arosio are from rhododendron (in Italian rosa delle Alpi,
literally translated "rose from the Alps"). The name of the commune is probably derived from
roseto (rose garden), rhododendrons being quite common in this area.
