Or, an Oak-tree eradicated Sable leaved and fructed proper.
Željko Heimer, 16 September 1999
The name "Echallens" comes from "Charlens"
which appeared for the first time in 1141 on a bull of Pope Innocent II
confirming the spiritual belonging of the village to the Abbey of Montbenoit
in Franche-Comte (France). The orthography "Echallens" finds its
origin in the XIVth century but the reason of the name's change is unknown.
Pascal Gross, 15 September 1999
