Santa María is a municipality in the Colombian Department of
Boyacá, part of the the subregion of the Neira Province. It was
elevated to municipal status on 1 December 1961.
The flag of Santa María is horizontally divided green-white-blue
with a diagonal (bottom hoist to top fly) yellow "light
beam".

"Designed by Elmer Ayonel Urrego, born in Santa María, the
flag is made of three equal stripes showing the balance between
the three elements represented by the three colours green, white
and blue:
- Green, the colour of the mountains and shades of the landscape
that surround us, represents the vegetal resources used for
agriculture, as wel as the exuberant flora and fauna harboured by
our tropical wet forests;
- Blue, symbolizing the colour of the sky and the clearness of
the municipal waters, represents the water resources, responsible
of 10% of the national energy supply, also a great potential for
tourism;
- Yellow, as a light beam representing the potential for
electricity that made of Santa María the 'Hydroelectricity
Center of Colombia'."

of Boyacá State, in the Valle de Tenza region, 160 kilometers

the Batá river is diverted to La Esmeralda Dam, the dam has a
storage capacity of 617.73 mm3. The regulated streams of the
Batá river are diverted through two parallel tunnels to the
hollow of the Lengupá river, where the power house is
located."
