Overview

The municipality of Puracé (a.k.a Puracé-Cocunuco) is in Cauca Department. It was founded on 1 December 1840.
The flag of Puracé is horizontally divided yellow-white-blue-green.

The source is incomplete, describing the order of the coloured stripes but addressing only the white stripe, as folows: "White represents an important product, milk; peace in the region; snow of the volcano Purac?; faith, hope and radiating light provided by God."
Volcano Puracé (~ 4,650 m) is one of the most active volcanos in Colombia. Largest eruptions occurred in 1849, 1869 and 1885, while the most recent one occurred on 19 March 1977. See Global Volcanism Program website.
