Institución Educativa Municipal Pedagógico was established on 27 November
1956 in Pasto (Nariño Department). The
institute was originally named Instituto Pedagógico Militar, since some classes
were given by retired members of the armed forces. The epithet "Militar" was
suppressed from the institute's name by Resolution No. 100 of 28 June 1984 after
the retired soldiers had sold their shares to the parents. It was recognized a
Departmental institute by Ordinance No. 19 of 24 November 1988. Instituto
Pedagógico was eventually renamed Institución Educativa Municipal Pedagógico by
Decree No. 54 of 9 September 2004. The institute's building known as "Conjunto
la Milogrosa" was proclaimed a National Monument by Decree No. 1,631 of 12
August 1988.
The flag of the institute is horizontally divided green-white-yellow. Green, the
colour of fresh grass, is the fourth colour of the solar spectrum, which can be
obtained by merging the primary yellow and blue colours. Green is a symbol of
spring, hope, rest, and freshness. White is the colour reflected by the sun,
which some stuff, like snow, reflect without decomposition. White is the
neutral colour in the chromatic circle and a symbol of peace. Yellow is
the colour of gold, of lemon, and of the broom flower. It is the primary and
tertiary colour in the solar spectrum. Yellow is a symbol of light, power,
constancy, nobleness, heat, and joy.
