image by Ivan Sache, 27 January 2019

Escuela Tecnológica Instituto Técnico Central (ETITC) originates in Escuela Central de Artes y Oficios de Bogotá, established on the model of the French École des Arts et Métiers by Decree No. 146 issued on 19 March 1904. Destroyed on 19-20 August 1917 by an earthquake, the school was re-founded by Decree No. 721 issued on 4 April 1919, as Instituto Técnico Central (ITC). The new buildings were designed in the 1920-1930s by the architect Benjamín Geric, in partnership with teachers and students of the school.
Decree No. 2,219 issued on 18 December 1931 merged ITC with the Faculty of Engineering of Universidad Nacional. The Lasallian Brothers, who had managed the school since its foundation, left; the teachers and students organized ITC Engineers' Society to maintain teaching and carry on the industrial projects they had initiated.
Between 1932 and 1951, the school successively adopted different names: Escuela de Artes Manuales, Escuela Industrial, and, again, Instituto Técnico Superior. Lack of funds and careless management caused the deterioration of the premises and technical workshops. In 1951, President of the Republic Laureano Gómez (1950-1953) called back the Lasallian Brothers to manage ITC.
ITC was placed in 1981 under the aegis of the Ministry of National Education; it was granted the status of public institute of superior education by Decree No. 758 issued on 26 April 1985. ETITC was eventually established by Resolution No. 7,772 issued on 1 December 2006, which made of it the first official School of Technology in Colombia.
