Overview

Cañas Canton (26,201 inhabitants, 68,220 ha) is made of the five districts of Cañas (20,816 inh., 19,322 ha), Palmira (988 inh., 20,481 ha), San Miguel (1,644 inh., 12,052 ha), Bebedero (2,084 inh., 5,798 ha) and Porozal (669 inh., 10,567 ha). Cañas Canton was established by Decree No. 9 of 12 July 1878.

The Flag

The flag of Canas, designed in 1878, is horizontally divided yellow-green. Yellow represents the aspiration of the inhabitants of the canton to sustainable development. Green represents the pampas and the foliage of guanacaste* tree.

*guanacaste, "Enterolobium cyclocarpum" (Jacq.) Griseb., was proclaimed the national tree of Costa Rica by Decree No. 7 of 31 August 1959.
