Shield Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules and superimposed by a bendlet Argent.
Meaning:
The lion of the Archbishopric of Bamberg already appeared on the first local seal from 1343. Since then he was displayed on any seal with or without shield. Between 1819 and 1836 the bendlet was omitted. Since the beginning of the 17th century the lion on seals was "riding" on the bendlet. In a coloured painting from 1603 and that of Siebmacher (1609) the lion is superimposing a red cross patty, alluding to the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, simply called Templars, who owned the city in the Medieval.
