Shield Azure, a cross gyronny Argent.
Meaning:
Hünfeld gainved city rights in 1310 from the Abbots of Fulda. The city belonged from 781 until 1802 to the Fulda Abbey. The oldest seal from the 14th century displays an abbot issuant with crozier, holding an inescutcheon with the cross of Fulda. In the 16th century the shield was placed in front of the abbot. Since the 19th century only the cross was used in seals and arms. At the same time the black cross in silver for Fulda was replaced by a silver cross in blue.
