Meaning:
Freyung had been a possession of the Bishopric of Passau until 1803. It had no proper symbols. The existence of the current pattern is proven since 1818 on a town seal. The free flying bird is supposed to allude to the name. The name is originated from the better rights of the settlers of the town, granted in 1354. The tree is symbolising the location in the Bavarian Forest. Freyung gained the status of a city in 1953. The city is the seat of Freyung-Grafenau County
