Description of coat of arms:
Shield Or, a key Azure in pale, superimposed by a milrind Gules in fess.
Meaning:
The arms display a combination of symbols from the arms of the two noble families that played a major role in the local history. The key is derived from the arms of the Lords of Bovenden, who had their estate in the town. The milrind is taken from the arms of the Lords of Plesse, who ruled the town until 1571, when they died out and Bovenden became a dominion of the Counts of Hessen. The flag colours are those of the shield of the Lords of Bovenden.
The arms were approved in 1953 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony.
