Ostritz Coat of Arms

Shield Azure an impending adorned porticus Or, in the open door a nun dressed in regalia of Sable and Argent, holding a crozier by her dexter hand and a book by her sinister hand.
Meaning:
In 1006 King Heinrich II donated Ostrusna Castle to the Bishopric of Meißen. The bishops however lost control and the castle disappeared without a trace. Under the castle a settlement was built around 1200. It was called a town in 1241 and a city with a proper market in 1295. Local rulers had been the Lords of Grafenstein and since 1346 the local Cistercian St. Marienthal Nunnery. In 1368 Zittau caused the destruction of the city walls and the town hall. In 1373 the existence of mayor and council is proven. The arms are based on a city seal from around 1400, basically displaying the same pattern, but the nun had no crozier but a rosary instead. The nun stands in the door of the porticus. The ensemble is symbolising that city rights can´t be touched as long as she is watching. The tinctures of background and elements changed a few times.
