Shield Gules with base wavy of Azure and Argent, a castle Argent masoned Sable with open port and two towers with pitched roof, between the towers an inescutcheon lozengy of Argent and Azure in bend.
Meaning:
The arms are based on the oldest seal, which probably was made around 1280 and is known by prints since 1292. The waves in base are a representation of the Donau River (Danube). The castle with gate is symbolising the status of a city. The inescutcheon is referring to the Wittelsbach kin, local ruler since 1377. Since 1523 a shield parted with lozenges and a grapevine, alluding to former viticulture, was used. On 31 January 1809 arms were granted by King Max I Joseph of Bayern, basically the same but with an additional golden lion with sceptre and sword on the shield. The arms with the lozengy shield were restored in 1950. The city is seat of the namesake county.
