Karlstadt Coat of Arms

Shield quartered 1st and 4th quarter Azure, 2nd and 3rd quarter Argent a fleur-de-lis Gules.
Meaning:
The oldest seal print from 1277 displays a sitting man with sword and baton and a leafy coronet. He was said to be Karl the Great. This hypothesis was stressed by the 2nd seal (around 1300) with bigger crown and semy of fleur-de-lis. In the 18th century he is depicted standing. He is considered to be the founder and name giver of the city. The shield quartered of blue and white appeared on seals since 1544. It is a differentiation of the arms of the city of Würzburg and the bishopric, both displaying the small assault flag (German: Sturmfähnlein) in different tinctures, red and yellow for the city and red and white for the bishopric. The additional fleur-de-lis appeared first on 1819. They are alluding to the name giver.
