Shield Argent an eradicated linden Vert.
Meaning:
The canting linden appeared on local coins since 1180, on prints of a shield shaped seal from around 1240 since 1258 with an additional inescutcheon displaying the imperial eagle in its treetop. The third seal from 1311 displayed two escutcheons on the roots with eagles reguardant. Lindau became a Free Imperial City in 1274 and kept this status until 1803. Nevertheless neither the city seals since the late 13th century nor the numerous depicitions of the city arms since 1446 displayed the imperial eagle and the linden remained alone. The number of leaves differed between three and 15. The basic tincture originally had been golden and was changed to silver since the middle of the 16th century. Seals of the city authorities in the 17th and 18th century often displayed a double headed eagle with the linden in an inescutcheon.

The arms are in use since the 12th century and the colours of flag and banner are traditional, based on the tinctures of the arms since the 16th century.
