Meaning:
Around the church dedicated to St. Nicolas, which was destroyed by fire in 1856, the old town (German:Altstadt) developed since 1150, a city of merchants. In 1232 the church dedicated to St. Mary in an older settlement, probably established by the Lords of Lobdeburg, became seat of the original parish in the Wisenta Shire. The lords were succeded by the Wettin kin and later since 1318 by the Reeves of Gera. Since 1616 the city belonged to the younger branch of the Reußen kin. In 1616 it became seat of the Lordship of Reuß-Schleiz, which was upgraded to a principality in 1806 and became part of the above mentioned younger branch in 1848. The old town was walled. In the late 13th century a new town (German: Neustadt) was added including another church dedicated to St. George, a castle and city walls, the latter mentioned in 1359. The old town was mentioned as a city in 1297, having a council and holding the low level cognisance. In 1482 both settlements merged. In 1851 Heinrichstadt was incorporated. The arms are punning and alluding to the Wisenta shire, to which Schleiz belonged. The wisent (Latin:Bos bonasus or Bison bonasus) appeared first at the end of the 13th century. The current form of the lesser arms was fixed in 1915.
