Wurzen Coat of Arms

Shield Sable, a horseman Or with hat and crozier mounted on a sinister facing horse forcene of the same, saddled and bridled Gules.
Meaning:
Wurzen was first mentioned in 961 as fortified settlement near a ford across the Mulde River. It was called a city in 1015. Since 1017 the Bishopric of Meißen gained ground in the area by forest clearance. The bishops established a great territory since 1150 against the resistance of the Margraves of Meißen, which acknowledged the status of the territory in 1284. After the last bishop had resigned in 1581, the region kept a privileged status within the Electorate of Sachsen. In 1634 the city was nearly completely destroyed by Swedish troops. The arms are based on a local seal from 1465. They originally displayed St. Wenceslaus, the local paton saint, with helmet and lance. By a malapropism the attributes were replaced by hat and crozier. In the 18th century even pistols were added.
