Before a bridge connected Fehmarn Island with the mainland, a ferry service had been in Großenbrode, "Brode" means "ferry", connecting the municipality with Burg upon Fehmarn. Wangels Municipal Coat of Arms

Meaning:
The bars wavy are symbolising the Baltic Sea and the numerous local creeks. The attire is symbolising forest riches and the existence of fallow deer therein. The ear of grain is symbolising agriculture as a main business line. The division into quarters is symbolising the numerous villages and estates, which formed the municipality. There were two phases of settlement in the 20th century: between 1928 and 1939 and between 1950 and 1952. 24 settlement cores had to be united. The biggest of them are Döhnsdorf, Grammdorf, Hansühn, Hohenstein, Kükelühn, Meischenstorf, Neutestorf, Wangels and Wasbuck. Also part of Wangels are the estates of Karlshof, Testorf, Meischenstorf, Ehlerstorf, Weißenhaus, Friederikenhof, Farve, Charlottenhof and the spa of Weißenhäuser Strand on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Furthermore numerous hamlets and farms are belonging to the municipality of Wangels, which is one of the most spacious in Schleswig-Holstein. The nettle leaf shows that Wangels is part of Holstein.

Weißenhäuser Strand Spa Banner

[Weißenhäuser Strand Spa Banner] 5:2 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 27 July 2022

It is a blue banner. Shifted to the top is a radiant yellow sun with 12 rays shaped like waves and another wave in centre of the sun. The colours blue and yellow are referring to sea and sun and sandy beaches. The Spa and resort was built between 1971 and 1973. The management changed frequently and the resort slided alongside of bankruptcy for years, but it always grew and expanded and acquired new attractions. Today it is considered to be a settlement core of the municipality. Name giver had been the nearby Weißenhaus Manor.
Source: I spotted this banner in front of the spa administration in August 1974. This banner probably is the very first one being hoisted in the municipality, before there had been any municipal flag.

The municipal flag was approved on 6 February 1980. The coat of arms was approved on 19 December 1978. The artist is Hans Frieder Kühne from Barsbüttel.
