Neustadt in Holstein Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
It is a red shield. A golden (= yellow) boat is cruising across blue and silver waves. Two men are sitting in the boat, one is steering the boat. The other one is rising his arm, swearing an oath. A silver (= white) nettle leaf is impending above the boat.
Meaning:
The colours are those of Schleswig-Holstein. The nettle leaf is symbolizing the counts of Holstein, the former rulers and the founders of (Kremper) Neustadt (Krempe New Town, Krempe is nowadays Altenkrempe) about 1244. The waves are symbolizing the Kremper Au (a local creek) the Binnenwasser (its mouth) and the Neustadt Bight (a part of the Baltic Sea). The boat is symbolizing shipping and trading. The swearing man is alluding to a confederacy of seafaring merchants. The pattern changed several times. The current coat of arms is based upon the oldest version, proven in prints at least since 1351.
