Shield Gules a double queued lion rampant Argent.
Meaning:
The Kings of Böhmen built a castle on top of a local table mount, which was first mentioned in 1241 and acquired by the Margraviate of Meißen in 1408. Since 1589 it was upgraded to the strongest Saxonian fortress. Beneath the castle a settlement developed, called a city in 1379 and having a church, which belonged to the Archbishopric of Prag. In the city the worldwide first trolley bus was in service since 1901. Furthermore quarrying, shipping on the Elbe, textiles and timber industries and brewing had been important business lines. The arms are symbolising that the city belonged to the Kingdom of Böhmen for centuries. A secret seal from 1555 displayed the crowned Bohemian lion, the crown was omitted since the 17th century and the lion got a hand of oath between his forepaws instead. The oath hand, a symbol used in court, was removed, when the Saxonian city arms had been revised in the 19th century. The greater arms, where the shield is superimposing an eradicated chestnut tree, is depicted on flag.
