Bodenmais Coat of Arms

Shield parted of Azure and Argent by the silhouette of a mountain, above the cap of an elector, a kind of coronet, Or, beneath hammer and mallet Sable in saltire.
Meaning:
The coronet and the basic tinctures are referring to the Electors of Bayern from the Wittelsbach kin. In 1522 they granted special mining privileges, the right to choose a proper local council and to hold markets and fairs. Despite of this privileges Bodenmais remained a village until 1958, when it was elevated to a market town. In 1697 the local district (Bavarian: Hofmark) was a direct dominion of the electors, who also acquired the complete shares of the local mines. Hammer and mallet as symbols of mining are referring to the local ore mining and the existence of a hammer mill. The silhouette is that one of the Silberberg, a local mountain ridge.
