Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is the image of a woman, dressed in a silver (=white) robe, holding a golden(=yellow) branch of a palm tree in her right hand, while leaning her left hand against a golden (=yellow) anchor.
Meaning:
According to source the woman is aid to be Sta. Reinhildis, a local saint. Others say, the woman, sometimes depicted with three ears of grain in her right hand, would be Sta.Katharine , the patron saint of the local parish church. The existence of her image was proven first on the sheet of a flag of the city, at that time named city of Kappeln, from 1796. The anchor is representing the former Upper County of Lingen. The colours had been changes in 1958. They were probably based upon the colours of the counts of Tecklenburg, the former rulers.
