Shield parted per fess; above Argent an embattled castle Gules masoned Sable, having two towers with cone roofs, and a lower central tower with dome shaped roof, crowned by a pennant Or, in open gate a half open portcullis over a capital "S" Or; beneath parted per pale; at dexter Argent a salt basket Argent decorated Or; at sinister Argent, on a triplemount Vert a king, crowned and sceptred Or and dressed Gules, sitting on a throne Or, flanked by two shrubs Vert.
Meaning:
The upper half shows the historical arms of the city, a city gate with the letter "S". This pattern already appeared on seals since the 17th century, but colours were not known until the image made by Hupp (1925).The salt basket displays the former arms of Bad Salzelmen - the former Groß-Salze - and it symbolises the riches brought to the area by salt mining. The king on throne is representing Frohse, where existed in medieval times a small royal court.
