Meaning:
Schlitz gained city rights in the early 15th century. The oldest seal is known from the 17th century. It displayed the arms of the Lords (since 726 Counts) of Schlitz, who ruled the area as vassals of the Imperial Abbey in Fulda, first mentioned in 1116. Later seals all displayed the same composition. The above arms are based upon an old city flag. The embattled bends sinister are representing the castles Nieder- and Oberschlitz (today Oberburg = upper castle). Acc. to Otto Hupp (1925) the city arms were the same as the inescutcheon in the current version.
The arms were approved in 1919 by Minister of Interior of Hesse.
