Telgte has c. 18.000 inhabitants and is an important place of pilgrimage because of the statue of the Virgin Mary, first mentioned in 1455. Telgte was founded in the 8th century, and first mentioned in the 11th century as "Telgoth". In 1238 it got town-rights. It was important as a bulwark against the Anabaptists c. 1534. Between 1654 and 1657 Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen (in the Netherlands better known as "Bomm'n Berend") had a chapel built for the statue of the Virgin Mary("Gnadenkapelle").

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a golden (=yellow), statant beaver. Below the beaver is a descending line of four golden (= yellow) rhombs/ lozenges.
Meaning:
The beaver surely is a canting element, the meaning of the line of rhombs I don't know.
