Jessen upon Elster City

Jessen upon Elster, precisely the Schwarze Elster (= black Elster) is in Wittenberg county. Before the municipal reform it was the seat of a county on its own.

Jessen Flag

It is a black over yellow horizontal bicolour with centred arms. The stripes' colours are not derived from the arms but signify the affiliation of the town with Saxony-Anhalt.

Jessen Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, issuant from base an embowed embattled wall Argent masoned Sable, issuant from base the western facade of a church Argent with port and windows Sable, its two towers having spired Azure, the arch between the towers topped by a crosslet Or, the whole flanked by two poplars Argent.
Meaning:
The current pattern is in use again since 1968 and is based on a seal print of the 14th century. The first deed sealed with this version is from 1358, certfying a defensive alliance between King Rudolf II and his cities Wittenberg, Aken, Herzberg, Prettin, Jessen, Kemberg, Schmiedeberg, Belzig und Niemegk against robber barons and ordinary organised thieves. The poplars sometimes are depicted green.

The arms were approved on 17 December 1993 and the flag on 13 May 1998 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Dessau.
