Shield Argent two keys Sable in saltire, on central chief a Greek crosslet of the same, orle Sable charged with eleven ball Or.
Meaning:
According to source the pattern is based upon the 2nd main seal of the city, dated about 1320. The keys are attributes of St.Peter, the patron of the Archbishopric and Electorate of Köln. Probably also the black cross is alluding to the archbishopric. The balls, which had been silver until 1953, probably are local distinguishing marks.
