Shield abased parted per fess; above Vert a sinister facing mounted saint Argent accompanied by a kneeling beggar of the same and dividing his coat Gules; beneath Gules a Paschal Lamb passant Argent with Latin crosslet Vert on the labarum; dexter flanch bendy of six of Argent-Gules-Argent-Gules-Argent-Vert, sinister flanch sinister bendy of six of Argent-Gules-Argent-Gules-Argent-Vert.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 1273 and became the seat of all kinds of textiles industries since the 16th century, especially linen weaving. In the 19th century Richard Lieberknecht invented a cotton spinning machine. The most important factory had been ELBEO, founded in 1914 by Louis Bahner, famous for its fine stockings for women, made of silk and later of nylon. In 1983 the city council adopted quartered arms as follows: 1st quarter Argent the local town hall Gules with roof Azure, 2nd quarter Gules a stocking Argent in bend sinister, 3rd quarter Azure a cogwheel Argent suprimposing a hammer of the same in bend hafted Or, 4th quarter Vert three grain ears Or. Despite of the town hall the charges represented the important business lines. The mounted saint in the current arms is St. Martin, the local patron saint, who already appeared on city seals since the late 19th century. The lamb is an attribute of St. John the Baptist. The tinctures red and white are those of the Lords of Schönburg, as Oberlungwitz belonged to their Lordship of Lichtenstein since the late Medieval.
