The parish of Luis Cordero, part of Azogues canton (Cañar province), was
established on 9 June 1917, merging the settlements of San Marcos, Bibillcay and
Leonán.
The parish is named for Luis Cordero Crespo (1833-1912), President of Ecuador in
1883 and from 1892 to 1895, and Rector of Universidad de Cuenca f1911-1912).

The flag of Luis Cordero is horizontally divided white- golden yellow-emerald
green, charged with a circle formed by 16 red stars. The white stripe is a
symbol of peace, harmony and purity. The golden yellow stripe is a symbol of the
natural and intellectual resources, fed by the radiating sun of everyday's life.
The emerald green stripe is a symbol of hope and of the fecund greenness of the
agricultural lands. The stars represent the 16 communities part of the parish;
red is a symbol of the people's ardour and valiance.
